fairytale lovers lose their way

by Scott Virtes

where they once came
& sweat in the moonlight
now
the gnarled roots cling
to the edge of the pavement

where they once watched
lives come & go like storms
now
there is only wind in trees
scratching their branchy heads

where they went home
signed their pact
& passed away into folklore
now
the old ruins passively tickle
the slit of the sky

where dreams have turned
to melancholy stoplights
their shadows hold hands
and
whisper sweet nothings
at passing cars.
