The Beast Within
by Karen L. Newman
I hear my name
in the shower at night
once
twice
mingling with the gurgling drain
igniting images of fire in my head.
Through the opened door
nothing's there - no smoke
only steam crawling on my skin.Later pantomimes parade
down Dreamland's main street
to expose secrets
and exhibit hidden desires
until the death knell at dawn
erases their footprints
leaving only strangled sheets.Janus-like I live
working extra hours, stealing office supplies
attending church, committing adultery
making promise, breaking promises. The battle wages day after day
my face a mine field
my heart an amputee
until the body armor breaks
revealing the beast within.
