Anger of Angels

by Sandy Hiss

She glared at me with hate
in her eyes. Black orbs
covering the white of burning
stars. I was melting.

Her alabaster skin glowed in
the candlelight, resembling a
death mask set on fire.

Crimson lips spilled insults,
the anger of angels apparent
in her crooked grin. A piece
of halo stuck between her teeth,
a souvenir she would deposit
in the bank for safekeeping.

I could feel the dark entity
drowning me from the inside.
My lungs filling with oceans
of tears cried long ago
by the fallen ones.

It was time to let go. Frail
fingers trembled in trepidation
as gold bands and diamond hearts
clinked against the fragments of
the past.

And with unconstrained hands,
I set the mirror face down.
Never looked back.
