Tree Spirits

by Todd Hanks

The tree spirits kneel
by the indigo river,
naked and longing,
green and slender,
with thighs smooth
as emeralds.
Once a month they
mate with the moon.
Its beams change to
warriors with wild hair
and celestial eyes.
From space comes
lunar moans,
and the forest is an
orgy of pulsing soil
and throbbing bark.
