Tragic Endings

a poetic essay on writing horror

by Andrée Gendron

how easy fates turn on “…a dark stormy night…”
or so it is written in spine-chilling tales
disembodied eyes burn hellishly bright,
and pale throats are bitten when fleeing fails

where every noise (real or imagined)
promises disaster, boldness or dread
the alert poise that each character lends
their hearts beating faster, choked words unsaid

the bleak backdrop: half-darkened scenery,
cold ground, a thick fog, fetid odors wreak
makes a soul stop to remark, “how eerie”
as the sound of a bog climbs to its peak

heroes will falter (an unwritten rule)
evil will prevail sure and unbending
outcomes never alter – authors must be cruel
for all the best tales have a tragic ending
