4 – 1: The Beginning of the End

*This commentary contains spoilers. Do not read if you have not seen the above mentioned episode.*

After almost a year on hiatus, Lost returns with a shortened season, and they wasted no time in getting the ball rolling in the first of eight episodes that is season four.

Naomi and Kate discuss the situationFor the first time, a Lost season begins in a flash-forward, a confusing yet clever bit they left us dangling with at the end of season three. But this flash-forward is even before that flash-forward…(confused yet?). We find a clean-shaven Jack serving himself a screwdriver while watching a high speed car chase involving a red vintage Camaro – one that looks very similar to the Camaro Hurley and his father once planned on fixing together. Seems Hurley is on the run from something he saw in a convenient store – a vision of Charlie that has apparently been haunting him. Upon being arrested, Hurley screams that he is one of the Oceanic six – and before the end of the teaser opening, another question is revealed; Who came back, exactly? Who are the six? We knew Kate and Jack were home at the end of season 3, and now we know Hurley. Who the other three are is still a mystery.

Hurley, then taken to a mental clinic, is visited by a couple shady characters; one claiming to be a lawyer for Oceanic Air, then obviously working for the island when he asked “Are they still alive?” Then, he is visited by Charlie who tells him “They” need Hugo’s help. It’s no mystery that survivors of the crash split in two as revealed by what happened on the island. Some stayed. Some left. But only 6? And Hurley took sides with Team Locke, who were determined on staying.

Segueing into the events of the island, news breaks of Charlie’s death and warning, and chaos ensues quickly. Locke quickly forms a group who are convinced that the rescuers are not who they say they are with the help of an emotional speech made by Hurley. Jack, on the other hand, forms the “We’re Leaving Society” with Kate on his side. As the camera pans back and we look at the group; there are still about 40 survivors albeit split into two teams. And as rescue landed in the shape of a parachuter, only 6 came back.

Hurley tells Claire about CharlieWhat happened to the others? Why did Hurley say he was wrong to choose Locke’s team? And when Hurley tells Jack that It wants them back on the island, what is he talking about? These are questions to answers that haven’t happened yet while we’re still waiting on answers for things that have already happened! Like who the hell is Jacob and why does he just sit in a remote cabin? Rumors are already abuzz that it could be Christian Shephard, but that’s just speculation. The point is, the flash-forwards are indeed a clever idea, but the questions they’re posing are making it seem as though getting off the island was the biggest mistake the Oceanic 6 made. And if that’s the case, the pay-off for viewers better be a big one.

All in all, it’s refreshing to see the show return amidst the writer’s strike (something I promised I wouldn’t mention in the commentary, but you can’t help it), and I look forward to seeing how this will all play out.

Until next time, get Lost
