3 - 17: Catch - 22
*This commentary contains spoilers. Do not read if you have not seen the above mentioned episode.*
So, Desmond was a monk… a drunk monk. He received his calling after a drunken night at the bar; Desmond awoke on the
street to an outstretched hand that belonged to Brother Campbell, the monk that later initiated him. And if that’s all that’s required to be a monk, I should very well be Pope by now. But, I digress. When Desmond is found drunk on the monastic wine, he is fired and paying his dues, he meets his future love, Penelope. As far as flashbacks go, that’s the only thing that tied Desmond’s story into the happenings of the island.
After another series of visions, Desmond believes that Penny is out to save him – and we know that she is if season 2’s finale was any indication. And as a viewer, one could only think, it’s about time they brought that back into the story… But his visions require Charlie’s life in a series of events that will bring Penny to the island – like God testing Abraham to sacrifice Isaac. But when Desmond interferes, saving Charlie for the forth time, we find that the person who landed on the island is not Penny after all but a dark woman we’ve never seen before; a woman who obviously knows Desmond. The book she was carrying was Ardil-22 – Catch-22 in Portuguese. The men we saw in the finale of season 2 who called Penny to say they found Desmond spoke Portuguese. So, odds are they all work for the same person. In a sense, Desmond’s visions were right. Rescue had come, just not in the person he expected. I can’t help ask, however, if Desmond had let Charlie die, would it have been Penny that landed on the island? And is this woman really out to save them - or is this a huge orchastration by the Others for someone else to infiltrate the group?
Truth is, visions of Charlie’s death have been dancing in Desmond’s head for far too long, and I’m beginning to wonder if we’re all being set up for something bigger. We know Charlie’s life is in danger, but when Desmond jumped before Charlie to save him from the arrow that was headed toward his neck, I wondered, for a brief moment, if it was Desmond who would die instead of Charlie. Desmond thought salvation was coming, and it could have had he jumped just a second later – the arrow would have hit him instead… Stranger things have happened on the island, and all I’m saying is I think we’re in for a bigger surprise than Charlie’s death.
Then there’s our sweet little Kate. In a jealous fit after seeing Jack and Juliet share an intimate dinner, she runs into Sawyer’s tent in tears. Demanding his “company”, Sawyer goes along with it (like any smart man would) but in the morning, he catches on to her little scheme. And in Sawyer fashion, he tells Kate “You ain’t gotta use me, Freckles. All you gotta do is ask.” Damn straight.
And last, but certainly not least, was this episode’s Easter egg. In the episode Flashes Before Your Eyes, we met a woman my tight knit group of Lost fans and I call God’s Wife – the jewelry shop owner who knew Desmond’s future, and the death of a man in red shoes. By the end of the episode (and after many conversations later), we decided she was nothing more than Desmond’s conscience. And if that were so, how would she end up on a picture frame on Brother Campbell’s desk? Is she real then? Is she really prophetic? Or is she nothing more than a remnant in Desmond’s memory thereby manifesting in his visions?
In the end, it’s all a Catch-22 as the episode was so aptly named – and to me that means one thing; either way, they’re all screwed.
Until next time, get LOST.
