3 - 15: Left Behind

*This commentary contains spoilers. Do not read if you have not seen the above mentioned episode.*

In an episode that will forever be thought to include the best catfight ever (at least by me), we learn that Kate had a deep, Juliet protects herself from the oncoming attackemotional run in and connection to one of Sawyer’s past loves – and con victim; Cassidy from The Long Con.

Desperate to speak to her mother, Kate returns to Iowa while running from the law only to run into Cassidy trying to perform a con Sawyer taught her. Kate helps her by preventing the would-be-victim from calling the cops, and to return the favor, Cassidy helps Kate find and set up a meeting with her mom. Of course, Kate’s mom wants nothing to do with her murdering daughter, and Kate is left to feel alone – left behind, if you will.

This all relates to the island’s happenings when Kate wakes up in the middle of the jungle after being gassed in Othersville. She wakes disoriented, confused, scared, and handcuffed to none other than Juliet who claims she too had been gassed. Lie # 1. Before Kate was gassed, she watches the Others pack up and protect themselves with gasmasks. Look closely and you’ll see Juliete walk across the screen (see right).

The episode continues as Juliet and Kate try and follow the trail left by the Others after they abandoned their quaint little village and Juliet decides to push Kate’s buttons by questioning her about her motives. “I hope we’re not going back for Jack,” Juliet tells her, claiming she was standing right beside him when he told Kate not to return for him. The catfight begins and Kate accidentally dislocates Juliet’s shoulder. Enter the smoke monster who proceeds to stalk them the entire episode. When Juliet screams “What is that!” we’re convinced she knows nothing of the invisible beast, but then we find out that was just Lie # 2. Upon being stalked, just after they reach the outskirts of Othersville Juliet uncuffs herself (Lie # 3 – she never mentioned that she had the key) and sets the same sonic fence pillars that killed Mikhail to prevent the monster from entering the village. She claimed that she didn’t know what it was, but she knew that it didn’t like their defense system. Sure. We believe you, Juliet.

Juliet and Kate get ready for their showdownIn the end, Kate finds Jack, and after a tearful apology, the two reunite with Sayid and Juliet. Jack decides it’s time to go back to their camp, and this time, he’s taking Juliet with him which doesn’t seem to make Kate or Sayid too happy – both for separate reasons.

Much is left to be answered after this episode, however. The Others abandoned their village to migrate somewhere unseen – and John Locke willingly went with them. Is he now an honorary Other? Where did they go? And more importantly, who is really the mastermind behind all the mindgames? Juliet blamed Ben for putting Kate and her in handcuffs and leaving them out in the jungle, but by the end it was clearly all part of Juliet’s plan. Now that she will be joining the rest of the camp, will the Others achieve the goal they’ve failed at before; having one of their own infiltrate the survivor’s camp as a good guy (or gal)? If Ethan or Goodwin are any indication, Juliet better play her cards right or she may be the next to be voted off the mysterious island.

We’ll have to wait until next week’s One of Us to find out.

Until next time, get LOST.
