So, it turns out Jack’s dad, Christian Shepherd, is also Claire’s dad. We here at the path suspected that already (see the commentary for episode 2-20, “Two for the Road”). But it didn’t take a genius to figure that out long before it was revealed, so there was no real shock element to the story. More shocking was Claire’s goth life in Australia before become the blond, pregnant good girl we met upon the crash.
And it was Clair who came up with a new plan to get them off the island; attach an SOS to a bird who was possibly
headed south – but capturing it was the tricky problem. Enter Desmond who retrieves a bird for Claire, (and once again preventing Charlie from dying) and the hope that someone will find it with a touching note penned by Claire begins.
Meanwhile, Kate, Locke and Sayid continue their search for Othersville alongside their prisoner, Mikhail. The mysterious Eye Patch Man is hesitant to reveal whether they are on the right track, explaining that he and the Others were brought to the island by a “great man” who is not Ben. While trying to get some answers, Kate questions Mikhail who informs her that she will not understand because she was flawed – and she was not on the list – and because we know she was on a list that brought her to that situation in the first place, could Mikhail be referring to the list that was found by Ana Lucia in season 2? The same list that had the names of all the kidnapped tailies? The list that someone by the name of Jacob wrote? And could the “great man” that brought the Others to the island be this Jacob? And could this Jacob possibly give us some freaking answers, please?!
Mikhail then revealed he knew much about his captors; Sayid, Kate and Locke. Rambling off information about each, he stopped at Locke – and the showdown between the two men ended just as Mikhail said he knew Locke was par… paralyzed? But later, Locke tosses Mikhail between sonic fence pillars outlining Othersville, killing the Eye Patch Man before we really began to hate him. My guess – Locke did it because Mikhail knew too much.
And computer-keyboard-trigger-happy Locke is then caught in his own lie. He tells Sayid, who was questioning him about the Flame station, that had he told him the basement was covered in C-4, he would have been careful. On the search for a hatchet in Locke’s bag, Sayid stumbles upon a block of C-4 Locke is carrying around. What is Locke’s agenda? Why is he killing people, lying about C-4, and blowing up a communication system that was their ticket off the island? Obviously, he’s got one of the strongest reasons to stay – unless he wants to be bound to a wheelchair again…
But the biggest twist of the episode was the end itself. Locke, Sayid and Kate make their way to Othersville and they see Jack who is running their way in what looks like an attempted escape. Kate, excited to see him, almost calls out for him, but Sayid forces her quiet. They watch in shock as Jack suddenly turns…to catch a football. A friendly game of toss between he and Other Tom is taking place, and Jack seems to be the happiest we’ve seen him in a long time.
Naturally, there’s an explanation, but like Kate, Sayid and Locke, we watched on in horror with one question in our minds… What The F___?!?
Has he been brainwashed? Is it a clone? Has he been an Other all along? Or is he just playing a part to become friendly with the Others knowing full well that he is on the same island as his camp? Hopefully, we’ll find out in The Man from Tallahassee, next week’s episode. Whether or not we find out what happened to Jack to make him so happy, we will find out what made John a paraplegic… and I speak for all Lost fans when I say It’s about time.
Until next time, get LOST.
