2-22: Three Minutes
*This commentary contains spoilers. Do not read if you have not seen the above mentioned episode.*
To say that this week’s episode, Three Minutes, was a standard episode of “Lost” is to overlook the unique story telling of Michael’s days with the Others. Normally, the episode revolves around one character’s flashback of an event in their past which somehow coincides with their current events on the island. In this episode, however, the flashbacks revealed the events where Michael, in desperate search of his son, finds the Others and is taken to their camp; an event that took place not two weeks before.
The first thing we notice is that, despite his wrong doings in killing Ana Lucia and Libby, is that Michael was not lying. The Others do live in camps. There was another hatch guarded by men with guns, and the children are, more than likely, inside that hatch. But the question remains, what do they want with them?
Michael is approached by Miss Clue – a sultry woman who seems to know about Walt’s special powers. After a series of questions like “Has he ever appeared to you though he was half a world away?” Michael demands to see his son, and Miss Clue obliges. For the first time in nearly all of season two, we see Walt – the real Walt – and his desperation to be saved makes him utter warnings like, “They’re not what they seem!” One can only assume he referrers to the costumes Kate found in a locker insinuating the Others are not the scrubs they appear to be. He tells his father that tests are being performed on him. Again – why? What do they want with his powers, and do all the children they hold captive possess the same abilities? After Miss Clue threatens Walt with putting him back in “the room”, Walt is whisked away and that’s when Miss Clue presents Michael with a way to get his son back.
When the episode began, we saw Michael burn a note, the contents of which were not visible. Anyone with a TiVo however, might have paused it to catch a glimpse of the writing (…not that I tried that, or anything). Those who did use their TiVos were not surprised by Clue’s ultimatum; free our man (Henry Gale) and bring us four of your people. She wrote the names down and handed the note to Michael which revealed the names Jack Shepherd, Kate Austin, James Ford and Hugo Reyes. Michael questions the name James Ford and Clue tells him, “You know him as Sawyer.”
Who are these people? How do they know more about the survivors than even they do?
Meanwhile, Michael rounds the four people up, and all are willing to go for their own reasons. Leave it to Sawyer to spill the bean and invite Sayid. When Michael objects to the idea, Sayid suspects something. Just before the funeral, he tells Jack that Michael’s been compromised. Leave it to Sayid to be the savior.
We’re left now to wonder exactly why the Others chose those four. What do they want with them? And just how far will Michael go to get his son back? It seems he’ll go as far as he needs to because not even Mr. Ecko’s sly way of telling Michael what awaits him in Hell is enough to stop him.
A few touching moments kept the show adrift starting with Sawyer’s confession to Jack. After Sawyer admits to sleeping with Ana Lucia, he tells Jack that he’s the closest thing to a friend he has, and considering their past, it was a great way of making us wonder whether Sawyer was being genuine or his usual sarcastic self. Then there was the funeral where a choked up Hurley says his final farewell to Libby – but the moment is ruined when Sun sees something in the ocean.
A sailboat.
Was it the boat Michael demanded from Miss Clue? Is it their salvation (though you can’t really rescue 42 people on a dingy sailboat, now can ya?). Or is it more fodder to feed us with for season 3; a boatful of people who just so happen to get stranded on the same island so that the writers have even more back stories to reveal? I could be wrong, but I seem to remember Desmond mentioning something about a boat... And just where has he been since he ran off into the jungle?
Next week’s season finale promises to answer so many questions, but those of us who watch the show know not to believe everything we hear or see.
Until then, get LOST.
