2-20: Two for the Road

*This commentary contains spoilers. Do not read if you have not seen the above mentioned episode.*

In an episode filled with lies, sex and shocking moments, several things happened that made us jump from our chairs and scream at the television (that couldn’t have been just me). So, we’ll get right to it.

Back story: Jack’s dad hires Ana Lucia as a bodyguard for his trip to Australia where they run into Sawyer and later, Jin.Jack's dad convinces Ana Lucia to go to Sydney with him Turns out, Jack’s dad had a mistress and a daughter in Sydney which could play into yet another relationship to be discovered on the island. That summarizes the most important elements of Ana Lucia’s back story.

Meanwhile, back on the island… Henry Gale makes a failed attempt at strangling Ana Lucia and she plots revenge the same way she got her revenge in the past; shooting her assailant down. Problem is, she doesn’t have a gun, so after stalking Sawyer, she decides a quick tussle and a little lovin’ is the only way to sneak it off him. She succeeds, but after a turn of events, that same gun becomes her worst enemy.

After deciding she can’t shoot Henry Gale, she gives the gun to Michael to do the dirty deed, only he has his own agenda. He turns the gun on her and shoots her in the stomach. While Ana Lucia coughs up her own blood, Libby walks in to find the scene and calls out to Michael. He shoots her – twice. And just after she falls to her death, Michael opens the door to Henry’s cell. The two stare each other down before Michael turns the gun on himself. A shot to the shoulder later, the screen goes black.

We can all guess as to why Michael did these things, but it all comes to one answer; he wants his son back. Maybe the Others told him that in order to see Walt again, he’d have to free Henry Gale. After all, They know he’s being held prisoner thanks to Jack’s screaming threats in the previous episode. If that’s the case, then everything Michael said; the Others living in tents, easy to attack, and not well armed are all lies. Perhaps he knew that telling them all this would get them out of the hatch to leave him and Henry Gale alone. Maybe Ana Lucia died simply because she was in the way – as did Libby. But really, can you blame Michael? Any parent would do what they had to do to get their child back. Still, it just plain ‘ol sucks.

So, two “tailies” are dead; and is it any coincidence that they were both arrested for DUI within 15 minutes of each other (“Two for the Road” anyone) a few months back causing negative publicity for the show? In an interview with Good Morning America, Michelle Rodriguez claims that she knew from the moment she signed onto the show that she would be killed off before season’s end. Be that as it may, like everything else on the mysterious island, it just seems to be too much of a coincidence.

Let’s talk about Hurley. He planned a surprise picnic for Libby, but forgot the blanket, which is why Libby went to the hatch (causing her to get shot). We haven’t seen Hurley’s reaction to the events yet, but he will no doubt blame himself. Not to mention his run of luck since he won the lottery – where everyone around him dies or gets injured. Just when he was becoming cured of his eating habits, this happens… Poor Hurley.

But is Libby really dead? She was holding a blanket before her, hardly enough to save her from two bullet wounds, but perhaps she’ll die a slow death. Maybe, just maybe, Jack will try to save her before the season’s end. Her death may seem inevitable now, but if she does survive for another episode or two, maybe we could get her back story and find out exactly why she was in an institution.

Libby's last look ar Hurley before her fatal mistakeFinally, some side notes: Anyone who is a die-hard “LOST” fan spotted the commercial that aired before the show’s final act; the one for the Hanso Foundation. Does the name Alvar Hanso mean anything to you? Hanso Corp are the creators of the Dharma Initiative which is what are castaways are caught in the middle of. A number was posted: 1-877-HansoOrg. For research only (and not because I’m completely obsessed with the show…’cuz I’m not), I called the number and couldn’t get through. Rumor has it, the number does nothing more than provide you with a username and password for thehansofoundation.org where an online game has begun (it began in the US on Wednesday, the UK the day before and Australia next week).

And then there’s the manuscript which was first mentioned by Hurley a few episodes ago and wound up in the hands of Sawyer. Fans of the show can purchase that manuscript through LOST’s website as an actual book which promises to shed some light on the island’s mysteries and give the online gamers an edge against those who don’t have a copy. The website plays it up as a manuscript that belonged to a passenger of the doomed Oceanic 815. However, before he got onto the plane, he gave a copy of it to his publisher. Now, it’s available for all Lost-ites to read. In short, a fictitious dead guy can get a book published – but I can’t?!

Until next time, get LOST.
