2-19: S.O.S.

Okay, so we now have confirmation of a few things we already suspected; 1) Mr. Ecko is building a church with (appropriately) Charlie, 2) Henry Gale is definitely, undeniably, without a doubt an Other, and 3) the island has healing powers.

In one of the most revealing scenes all season long, Locke decides to leave the hatch to “stretch his legs” and enjoy the view of the beach. Along comes Rose, the loving woman we didn’t know much about until this week’s episode. They sit side by side and in a few choice words, she reveals she knows Locke’s secret – but we’re left to wonder how.

Locke hands Rose her pills during their first encounter
Rose, a cancer victim, falls ill in a flashback and her desperate husband, Bernard, takes her to a “Healer”. He does nothing for her. She can feel the sickness within her – but it disappeared once they crashed onto the island ala Locke’s miraculous ability to walk after being bound to a wheelchair for years (though we still don’t know why). Rose remembers their encounter at the airport when he picked up a pill bottle she dropped and handed it to her – and yet again, there’s another connection between the characters.

But this episode, despite its attempt at giving us some definite answers, was made up of several other episodes we’ve seen before. When Bernard rallies the refugees to explain his plan of being rescued, Rose tells him, “you’re giving them false hope” which is exactly the issue Jack had to tackle in this season’s opener. The psychic who knows something’s not right about the person they’ve encountered (anyone remember Claire’s story?). And finally, the surprise ending where the missing person returns from the middle of the woods completely battered and bruised. Are the writers of the show running out of material or is this part of their scheme that will eventually have an explanation?

A moment of flirtatious silence between Jack and Kate

Let’s talk about Jack and Kate for a moment. What’s the deal? After being bound together at the waist in a convenient trap, they share an intense couple of minutes. Later on, in front of a campfire, she breaks another intense moment by saying, “I’m sorry I kissed you.” This happened episodes ago and now is when she brings it up? But leave it to Jack to say what any man in his right mind would. “I’m not.” Their flirtations and longing stares are always interrupted by someone running out of the woods or by a smart remark by Sawyer and so the affairs will have to wait. But it’s good to know that at least some people are getting their game on. Then again, there’s the whole Jack / Ana-Luica / Sawyer / Kate love box that will explode eventually so we have more to look forward to on that.

All in all, this week’s episode did conjure up some new questions, but it made a bold statement that puts our favorite castaways since “Gilligan’s Island” in an unknown future. We now have 4 people who don’t want to leave the island:
1) Rose, who fears her cancer will return once she leaves the island.
2) Bernard, being the faithful husband, will stay where his wife wants to be.
3) Locke who believes his legs will no longer work off the island.
4) Walt who, quite simply, is sick of moving.

Speaking of Walt, finally we’ll have some answers as to where he’s been. The missing boy’s missing father has finally returned and from the looks of the coming events (the new episode titled Two for the Road which airs on May 3rd) we just may discover what he’s been up to. For now, your guess is as good as mine.

Until next time, get LOST.
