Smurf Sex, Cheddar Princesses and a Giant Shaven Cat:
A review of Chris Moore’s newest novel;
You Suck: A Love Story
![]()
You Suck is Chris Moore’s sequel to his bestseller Bloodsucking Fiends in which Jody, a sexy red-headed vampire, crosses paths with C. Thomas Flood (aka Tommy) and changes his life for the better. You Suck picks up right where BSF left off; when Tommy and Jody finally fornicate - and now it’s Tommy’s turn to wake up as a vampire.
But Tommy quickly discovers that living the life of a vampire is not so simple. There are things he must learn such as who or what to feed off of (hence the giant shaved cat) and that he will no longer enjoy the simple pleasures of…moving his bowels (vampires just don’t need to). As Jody tries to teach him the vampire ways, though she herself is new to vampirism, the novel is at its funniest. Chris Moore’s ability to suck (no pun intended) us into the do’s and don’t’s of vampire life sets us right beside the two characters. Tommy discovers that his heightened sense of smell has ruined his ability to be social because everyone smells bad while Jody finds ways to get “errands” done with the aide of minions; people vampires recruit to run around for them during sunlight hours.
Back from BSF are Tommy’s clan of irrational, unfounded friends known as The Animals who, after a trip to Vegas, have “hired” a blue-painted woman who finds herself thrown into the mix completely by accident. Also back is the centuries-old vampire that is seeking his apprentice, Jody, on a vengeful streak filled with blood-lust. And just like the familiar characters, there are new ones that are just as delightful…and just as tasty.
Fans of Moore’s work know what to expect as far as his writing is concerned; playful words and brilliant one-liners that you will want to write down and use on your friends – and You Suck is no exception. The goofiness of the characters and the absurd situations make this a definite page turner, and for those who’ve read his other works, there are a few easter-egg type cameos that bring you even more laughs.
You Suck is indeed a love story; a bizarre, outrageous, and completely insane love story – the way all love stories should be. What more can you expect from author of such novels as Lamb, The Stupidest Angel, and last year’s New York Times bestseller, A Dirty Job?
