Part 3:

The Curse of Scary Movies

by Carlos Savournin

Yes, scary movies are cursed because only a select few are scary enough to watch on Halloween night, year after year. But really. Who wants to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street again? Michael Myers? Jason? Pinhead? All of them are tried and true, but they’re has beens. So, for the third year in a row, we at Moonlit-Path are here to offer up something a little different; an alternative to Scream and The Exorcist. This year, we offer up a few movies that are guarantee a bloody good time; the Horror Comedy.

Here are the top 10 movies that will provide a gut-busting, screaming good time.

10. The Scary Movie Franchise: Sure, they’re not all that scary, but the movies are fun for any fan of the horror genre. They don’t take themselves seriously, but you can identify almost all the movies being parodied. Plus, Anna Farris’ deadpan delivery is worth it (especially with the first 2 entries).

9. Slither: A little movie that surprised critics and audiences alike. A small town is over taken by a plague that turns its residents into zombies and monsters. Think The Thing meets Scream. A fun movie that surprisingly makes us laugh and cringe.

8. Army of Darkness: Picking up where Evil Dead: II left off, this movie pretty much stands alone with Ash fighting to return home from 1300 AD. If only he can beat the undead that seem to want him to stay. Its cheesy dialogue and stop-action sequences made this film a laughable cult classic.

7. Re-Animator: Loosely based on HP Lovecraft’s work, a dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus. It’s as funny as it is disturbing.

6. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon: This mockumentary follows the newest slasher as he slices his victims. Another crowd and critic pleaser, this little known film delivers the laughs between the blood and proves that even Jason, Freddy and Michael all need someone to look up to.

5. Bubba Ho-Tep: Yet another little known film which is an extremely bizarre pop culture celebration. Take two of the most influential dead people, put them in a nursing home and have them fight off an ancient Egyptian mummy. And it’s got Bruce Campbell. ‘Nuff said.

4. An American Werewolf in London: A definite classic, this horror movie becomes comedic when two American tourists are attacked by a werewolf in England. Considered one of the best werewolf horror movies filled with dark humor and gory thrills.

3. From Dusk till Dawn: This Quentin Trantino / Robert Rodriguez collaboration is a genre favorite with an all star cast and explosive action sequences. When 2 criminals and their hostages unknowingly seek temporary refuge in an establishment populated by vampires, chaos ensues. Let the laughs begin.

2. Young Frankenstein: The Mel Brooks classic takes Mary Shelley’s masterpiece and turns it into one of the funniest movies ever put on film. Dr. Frankenstein's grandson, after years of living down the family reputation, inherits granddad's castle and repeats the experiments – with hysterical results.

1. Shaun of the Dead: Before Hot Fuzz, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were fighting off zombies in this brilliant horror comedy. Quick wit and an ear for dialogue is a must for anyone watching this film which is why it reigns above the rest. Turning into an all out horror film by the end, the movie is filled with laughs, tender moments and bloody scares catapulting it to Cult Classic status almost immediately.

All these movies are available at your local video-rental store. Go out and make your Halloween night a funny one. And remember, Moonlit-Path cannot vouch for the experiences of watching these films. If you did't think they were funny, don't blame us. Rent another one, and while you're at it, buy yourself a sense of humor.
