With fright night right around the corner, we at Moonlit Path decided to let you in on some frightfully secret movies that will replace the usually viewed seasonal films. You won’t find any Friday the 13th on Elm Street, nor will you find Scream Because I Know What you did Last Night of the Living Dead. These ten films offer something different, and they have been hand-picked by our staff to ensure a bone-chilling night.
John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness (2000)
Sutter Cane is the best-selling author whose newest novel is literally driving readers insane. When he inexplicabley vanishes, his publisher sends special investigator John Trent to track him down. Drawn to a town that only exists in Cane’s books, Trent crosses the barrier between fact and fiction and enters a terrifying world from where there is no escape. And it’s inspired by tales of HP Lovecraft, to boot. Starring Sam Niell.
Pumpkinhead (1989)
A group of city kids go into the country to relax. While there, one of them is involved in a biking accident that takes the life the local storekeeper's son. In a fit of rage, the storekeeper has a witch unleash an unstoppable demon called "Pumpkinhead" to kill the group. When he realizes he's gone too far, the storekeeper attempts to save the kids, but is continually afflicted by visions of peoples' deaths through the eyes of the monster. Directed by Stan Winston. Starring Lance Henriksen.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie Darko is a disturbed adolescent from a semi-functional upper-middle-class family. After nearly escaping from death because he hears the voice of a 6-foot-tall bunny, Donnie is led by the bunny to create havoc that is both destructive and creative. Directed by Richard Kelly. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal.
Event Horizon (1997)
In the year 2047 a group of astronauts are sent to investigate and salvage the long lost starship "Event Horizon". The ship disappeared mysteriously 7 years before on its maiden voyage and with its return comes even more mystery as the crew of the "Lewis and Clark" discover the real truth behind its disappearance and something even more terrifying. Directed by Paul WS Anderson. Starring Laurence Fishburne.
Hell Night (1981)
Before being able to join Alpha Sigma Rho fraternity and its sister sorority, four pledges must spend the night in Garth Manor, twelve years to the day after the previous resident murdered his entire family. Some, however, say that one member of the Garth family survived, and still resides somewhere in the now-deserted mansion. The pledges soon find they will pray for day. Directed by Tom DeSimone. Starring Linda Blair.
An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Two American students are on a walking tour of England and are attacked by a Werewolf. One is killed, the other is mauled. The Werewolf is killed, but reverts to it's human form, and the townspeople are able to deny it's existence. The surviving student begins to have nightmares of hunting on 4 feet at first, but then finds that his friend and other recent victims appear to him, demanding that he find a way to die to release them from their curse, being trapped between worlds because of their unnatural death. Directed by John Landis. Starring David Naughton.
Demon Knight (1995)
Brayker is a man who carries the last of seven keys, special containers which held the blood of Christ and were scattered across the universe to prevent the forces of evil from taking over. If The Collector gets the last key, the universe will fall into Chaos, and he has been tracking Brayker all the way to a small inn in a nowhere town. And now the final battle for the universe begins… Directed by Ernest R Dickerson and Gilbert Adler. Starring Billy Zane.
The Entity (1983)
Carla Moran awakens one night to find herself being beaten and raped by an unseen presence. Terrified of what's happening to her, and shunned by friends and family who think she's lost her mind, she seeks help from parapsychologists. The researchers soon discover that evil spiritual force has been drawn to Carla and is responsible for the violent attacks. The question now, however, is how do they stop it? The Evil Dead (1983)
Five friends go up to a cabin in the woods where they find unspeakable evil lurking in the forest. They find the Necronomicon and the taped translation of the text. Stir of Echoes (1999)
