I Know What You Didn't
Watch Last Halloween
Part 2
The Return of the sleeper Halloween Hits

by Mason Bayer

Last year, we were kind enough to compile ten horror movies that were perfect for Halloween because they were outside the norm. No Nightmares or Fridays. No Exorcisms and no Blair Witches. This year, we’re offering you ten more flicks that offer something different, but promises to make your Halloween just as chilling. See if you can catch the common thread in all of the movies below…

Wolf Creek (2005)
Just when you thought it was safe to go hiking in the bushes again. Kristy, Ben and Liz set out to hike through the scenic Wolf Creek National Park in the Australian Outback. The trouble begins when they get back only to find that their car won't start. The trio thinks they have a way out when they run into a local bushman named Mick Taylor who has something terrible in store for them. And oh yeah, it’s based on a true story.

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Clarice Starling, a young FBI agent, is assigned to help find a missing woman, and save her from a psychopathic killer with the help of another killer. This film help put horror back on the map with frightening images in mind-bending twists. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster in Academy Award winning roles, it’s a definite seasonal favorite.

American Psycho (2000)
Based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis, the movie follows in the soul-less life of Patrick Bateman; a wealthy New York stock executive that hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies.

Saw (2004)
Adam and Dr. Gordon wake up chained to pipes at opposite ends of a dirty bathroom. They soon learn that they have become the victims of a man who devises intricate situations to teach his victims the value of their lives by forcing them to hurt themselves or others to stay alive.

Se7en (1995)
This thriller portrays the exploits of a deranged serial-killer. His twisted agenda involves choosing seven victims who represent egregious examples of transgressions of each of the Seven Deadly Sins. He then views himself as akin to the Sword of God, handing out horrific punishment to these sinners. Two cops, an experienced veteran of the streets and an ambitious young detective, team up to capture the perpetrator of these gruesome killings. Unfortunately, they too become ensnared in his diabolical plan....

Hostel (2005)
3 backpackers are in Amsterdam where they get locked out of their youth hostel. They are invited into a man's house where he tells them of a hostel somewhere in Eastern Europe where the women are all incredibly hot and have a taste for American men. When they get there, everything is too good to be true – and that the hostel is to die for.

House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Two teenage couples traveling across the backwoods of Texas searching for urban legends of serial killers end up as prisoners of a bizarre and sadistic backwater family of serial killers.

April Fool’s Day (1986)
Okay, I know this is a Halloween list, but this movie lands in a tight space between Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th as one of the most popularly forgotten Slasher flicks of the 80’s. When 9 college students go to a secluded mansion during their spring break, they discover a killer is among them – and they’re all on the killer’s list.

When a Stranger Calls (1979)
Before Scream and long before it’s horrid re-make, When a Stranger Calls made the phone one of the scariest items in our homes. A high school student is terrorized over a night of unknown phone calls while babysitting. After realizing the caller is inside the house and murdered the children she was babysitting, the caller is taken to prison. Seven years later, the caller escapes and threatens to take the lives of the babysitter’s own children.

Psycho (1960)
A certain classic in its own right, Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece is a fine way to end this list. Marion Crane steals $40,000 from her employer's client, and subsequently encounters a young motel proprietor too long under the domination of his mother – or is it his mother after all? One of the first movies to be bold and daring enough to kill its star a quarter of the way through, Psycho still reigns as one of the scariest movies of all time; and you will inevitably think twice about stepping into the shower while you’re alone in the house.

So, this Halloween, lock your doors, turn off your lights, and settle down with at least one or all of the movies listed above. And before you go to sleep, try and convince yourself that these are just movies. It’s easy to do with all the Freddy or Jason movies, but when you watch a horror movie where the main villain is not a monster at all – but a human – it makes it a little harder to forget.

Enjoy. And sleep well.
